Village history dates Potamitissa back to the middle ages. It was established by the inhabitants of the village of Rogia, when that village was destroyed by the Saracen pirates prior to the start of the Ottoman era in 1570.
The village church, built in the Byzantine style, is dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary and stands regally overlooking the steep river banks of the River Ambelikos.
Housed in a newly refurbished and unique cluster of traditional stone houses built in the late 1800's, Ambelikos AgroHotel & Tavern has preserved its distinctive Cypriot character, whilst including all modern conveniences. It is a superb example of Cypriot cultural heritage reviving the 150 year history of a Potamitissa family pioneering the production of smoked pork products; today Gregoriou is the leading brand on the island.
